Media Gateway

A media gateway is a translation device or service that converts (transcodes) digital media streams to enable connections between varying telecommunications technologies.

Within the VoIP world, the most common gateways transcode inbound communications from the PSTN (Analog/ISDN) networks and / or GSM networks into SIP (Session Initiated Protocol). This is because, the majority of modern VoIP phone systems use SIP as their core communications media.
